Mondays. Yuck. Is there anything in life more constant than Mondays? Unfortunately, no. Well maybe yes, summer & BBQ. However, I’m going to let you in on a little secret here, Mondays are productive. As in typically my most productive day of the week, well besides Fridays because I drink on Fridays. And that’s work in my book. Mondays are my full day, a busy industry day, a busy catch-up day. Today, a work day and tonight a Syrah BBQ night. This year, I’m making every single ingredient in my BBQ’s. AKA, the sauce. Well, nothing BUT the sauce is homemade. Syrah BBQ sauce that is. And you should do the same, with our Gård Syrah. Go buy a bottle, or two. You’ll need two, one for the sauce and one to get sauced. Here it is, and if you’re not already planning to make this sauce tonight, well then I guess you’re not a Monday person.
This simple BBQ sauce can be used for a variety of meats, from salmon to chicken, for the summer release we covered our smoked pulled pork with it. Smoked meats pair well with Syrah, bringing out the strong texture and sweetness from the berries and bittersweet chocolate. Makes about 2 cups.
½ white onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeno, diced
1 cup Gård Syrah
½ cup ketchup or 8 oz. tomato paste (if you like a sweeter BBQ sauce, use the paste)
2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp soy sauce
½ tsp cumin
Heat a pan to medium heat with a couple drops of olive oil, sauté the white onion. When the onion starts to brown, add the garlic and jalapeno and cook for 2 minutes. Deglaze the pan with the Syrah. Reduce the wine until only 1/3 of the liquid is left. Add the ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce and cumin. Bring to a boil, remove from stove and cool.
Happy Monday you productive sauce-lovin’ people!
